Some customers have asked me… “What is the secret ingredient in nirāmaya products?” Drum roll, please…

The secret ingredient is essential oil. Essential oil is the natural essence of a plant. Essential oil is nature’s medicine. Inside many plants—in their roots, seeds, flowers, or bark—are concentrated, highly potent, natural chemical compounds. These natural compounds are essential oils. Essential oil gives a plant its scent, protects it from hazardous environmental conditions, and even assists it with pollination, among other important functions and benefits.

How essential oil is extracted from the plant can make a significant difference in the quality of the oil. Steam distillation is the most popular method of extraction. This happens when steam is used to vaporize the plant’s volatile compounds, which eventually go through a condensation and collection process. Solvent extraction uses food grade solvents to isolate essential oils from the plant material. CO2 extraction is similar to steam distillation but CO2, instead of steam, is used to extract the oil from the plant. In maceration, carrier oils (e.g., almond oil, jojoba oil, etc.) are used as solvents to extract therapeutic properties from plant material. Enfleurage uses vegetable or animal fat to infuse the plant’s fragrance compounds. Cold-pressed extraction presses the plant to squeeze out the juice and oil. Water distillation sees the plant submerged in pure boiling water. Lastly, water and steam distillation have the plant material immersed in water to which heat is applied to extract the plants essence.

Essential oils typically come in three grades, or qualities. Grade A or therapeutic grade essential oil is produced from plants grown through organic practices. The oil from these plants are distilled for the natural-chemical constituents, not their smell. This means that great care is taken to use the proper parts of the plant to make the essential oil. The production process of Grade A oil is geared toward preserving the highest potential healing quality of the plant, so that you can benefit from the highly concentrated and therapeutic nature of the plant. Food grade or Grade B essential oil are, at best, diluted with carrier oils. At worst Grade B essential oils may have toxic chemicals added to enhance flavor or smell and extend the life of the oil. Some manufacturers dilute their oil to increase profits. Perfume grade or Grade C essential oil have the same issues as food grade oil.

nirāmaya uses only organic, therapeutic, Grade A essential oil in its products. We source these oils from only the most reputable producers. These companies do not use chemical solvents or additives to enhance (or adulterate) the oil. So not only are you experiencing the wonderful scent of the oil, but you are also benefiting from the therapeutic qualities of the essential oil.

So…the secret it out. But it’s not so much a secret as it is a commitment to use only the purest ingredients in the products we offer. All of the products we offer are all-natural and pure.
